Regional Art Shows Strength at Cowan's Auctions
If you were in the salesroom during the June 6th auction of Decorative Arts at Cowan's, you would have witnessed the noticeable hush that fell over the room when the collection of 5 works by Kentucky artist Paul Sawyier came on the block. Our Kentucky bidders in the salesroom set down their coffee, those at home received a call from someone on our panel, and everyone got down to business.
The bidding was serious and rapid, and when the final hammer fell, the Sawyiers had commanded an aggregate of over $50,000.
Portrait of "Mayme" Bull by Paul Sawyier realized $27,025 in Cowan's June 6, 2009 Fine and Decorative Art Auction
To date, Cowan's has offered a total of 18 works by Paul Sawyier, with a total hammer amount of over $170,000- evidence that regional art has a powerful presence in the Midwest. Works by Cincinnati, Ohio, Kentucky and Indiana artists continue to grow in popularity.
In our Fall sale of American & European paintings, Cowan's will offer a tremendous grouping of regional art, including works by Thomas Lindsay, William McKendree Snyder, Harvey Joiner and others. Check out this example by George Jo Mess (Indiana, 1898-1962), perhaps the best example by the artist having surfaced in recent years.
